Priest, Clergyman, Bishop, Minster, Nun, Deacon, Diocese, Archdiocese
It’s been more than two decades since the first clergy sex-abuse scandals came to light for the Roman Catholic Church, which has in turn has become a global crisis affecting numerous religious organizations.
Sexual abuse inflicted by a member of the clergy or priesthood (also referred to as “soul rape” or “soul murder”) is the ultimate betrayal to their victims. These victims came seeking spiritual or moral guidance; however, these priests and ministers often exploited and groomed their victims for sexual abuse by using their power and trust over them.
Covering Up Child Sex Abuse & Crimes
Powerful religious organizations like the Catholic Church have long been able to shelter accused priest and clergy as there continues to be no mention of penalties, censures, or removal from office for bishops who continue to hide and cover-up for the abusive priests.
According to The Washington Post article, some progress has been made. Over the past 10 years, Catholic parishes have trained more than 2.1 million clergy, employees, and volunteers about how to create safe environments and prevent child sexual abuse. More than 5.2 million children have also been taught to protect themselves, and churches have run criminal background checks on more than 2 million volunteers, employees, educators, clerics and seminarians.
However; the New York Times reports that the Catholic Church has been quietly engaged in equally consequential battles over abuse, not in courtrooms but in state legislatures around the country. The fights concern proposals to loosen statutes of limitations, which impose deadlines on when victims can bring civil suits or prosecutors can press charges.
